Today is the International Day of Sign Languages, where people are recognising the importance of sign languages around the world. This year's theme is "Sign Language Rights for All!".
According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. There are over 300 different sign languages and over 70,000 deaf people in the UK have British Sign Language as their first language.
The United Nations want to encourage schools to teach sign language as part of the curriculum in order to make sure nobody is left out.
As the creators of the award-winning app., StorySign, we are delighted that today marks the importance of sign languages around the world. We created StorySign for Huawei in 2018, a free app that uses the power of AI to translate selected children’s books into sign language, delivered by Star, our friendly signing avatar. StorySign uses the power of Huawei’s AI to create an authentic reading experience, translating popular children’s books into sign language, helping to open the world of books to deaf children and their families.
